This week on The SEO Mad Scientist

Will Google Web Stories Solve Our Cannibalization Issues?

So far, we have yet to see any results from our single variable cannibalization tests.

We’ve even tried some single variable tests on other listings that had experience cannibalization but believe whatever causes cannibalization will likely not be overcome by a single variable.

This is why we’ve decided to focus on just one cannibalization keyword and see if we can determine any other signals that may help a cannibalized listing outside of the signals we’ve currently been testing.

The first one we wanted to give a shot at was Google web stories. Google provides a simple plug-in to allow you to create these web stories, and with the emphasis on this type of content currently online, this may influence rankings.

Get the Plugin Here & Test Yourself: https://wordpress.org/plugins/web-stories/

We have begun posting Google web stories daily on one of our cannibalized listings. We are targeting the cannibalized keywords and some other variation terms, so whether or not we beat cannibalization, we will be able to determine if the web story’s helped.

Joining next week with an update on Google web stories and how they impact local search. Until then, as always, happy testing!

Customer Success Agent: Alcmena Curiteanu

Customer Success Agent: Alcmena Curiteanu

Meet Our Customer Success Agent: Alcmena Curiteanu

alcmena mena curiteanu

Started as a Google My Business optimization specialist, where I had to proofread GMB posts, optimize the listing, optimize the GMB site, photos, and many more tasks. Three months later, I was promoted and became in charge of the GMB Department Support box (including invoices, renewing, technical tickets, technical audits, reporting, and having regular calls with our clients). The role taught me how to juggle multiple tasks across multiple departments. I learned a lot, and help me get to the root of our services and Web20 mission. I am now part of the Customer Success department and couldn’t be happier.

Professional Bio (3-5 sentences):

I am a self-taught marketer with 7 Years of experience. I enjoy growing and achieving goals, creating and developing new products, training, and workflows. When offline, you will most likely find me in the woods with my dogs, gym, or at a meditation class.

How long have you worked with Web 20?

I joined Web20 Ranker 2 years ago, in December.

What does your job entail?

I am completing campaign recommendations, joining on calls with marketing agencies owners, and going through our services, we call it a demo call, but in fact, it is more like a discovery call where we can get to have a free call about what we do, what they should expect, how we work and expectations. We are a team of professionals, and that is why I am so confident about our products. I also assist in developing new products and strategies and many other tasks that come along with new projects.

What do you like most about your job?

At the moment, I believe that being able to send the best SEO recommendation, campaign-wise, is one of the biggest rewarding aspects of my role. I know how frustrating and confusing it can get, and I believe that having such a service is great for us and our audience. Some people do not know what to choose just because our portfolio is so large and we have so many services and having someone analyze your business and recommend the same specific services is bliss.

What motivates you to wake up and go to work?

I have plenty of personal goals, and these are the aspects that motivate me to wake up and go to work. From a great career perspective to connecting with people with a great mindset, great compensation, and an ethical working environment are just some of the things that motivate me to show up every day.

How has Web 20 helped you in your career development?

Web20 Ranker was just great at validating my skills and potential. I was always a customer-oriented person; however, here, I learned to create a balance of customer support with technical SEO. Both aspects are things I enjoy doing, and I think that Web20 helped me improve my technical skills but managerial skills as well.

If you could switch your job with anyone else within Web 20, whose job would you want?

Um, this is a question that I should’ve been asked when I was still in the GBP department so that I could answer that I would love to be part of the Customer Success department. Now that I am here, I don’t think I want to switch jobs with anyone else.

What advice do you have for prospective Web 20 candidates?

Take your time, trust the process, and attend the training we organize every week. You will learn more than you can imagine.

What drew you to Web 20 originally? And how has Web 20 changed since?

When I joined Web20, my team leader and I were part of the team. Then we got another member – 1 month later- just the 3 of us. We were closely working with another team member that used to set up the campaigns. Now, that department has little over 10 members, and the GBP department extended so much that I believe there are over 30 team members in there. Of course, the algorithm changed, the processes have changed, audits and reports changed as well, and yes, we needed additional team members.

I also remember not having a Customer Success department which we now do, and hopefully, we will be able to expand it as well. Who knows where we will be one year from now?

What have you gained from working at Web 20?

I learned how to become a great campaign manager and quickly transition from one business profile to another, as our clients are obviously different. I learned how to treat better the B2B business environment as well as B2C, and that is a very important value for me.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

Well, I have lots of activities that I do, but my top 3 favorite activities are:

  • Gym & Yoga
  • Spending time with my 4 dogs
  • Spending time with my mom in our greenhouse, where we plant vegetables and other stuff
  • I would also say sailing, but I do not have a skipper license to go whenever I want so we will skip this.

One quote you live by

“One of the most underrated secrets to success is to start before you are ready.”

How do you define success?

Hard work and always be ready for the ups and downs. It can take years to have it and seconds to lose it, just like trust.

What has been your favorite project at Web 20?

Launching the new GBP Monthly campaigns. It’s been a roller coaster, but I was so happy with the new products, and I had and still have so much faith in the strategy that the merge was worth every second.

What is your greatest fear?

It is this thing called Phrenophobia. It is when you have anxiety about getting anxious, for fear of “going crazy.” It’s the fear that you’ll lose control of yourself and never be the same again.

Where is your favorite place to be?

At the top of Holywood Hills, LA. I was at this house a few times, and it was just at the top of the hills and breathtaking.

What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?

I had an internship in San Diego. This happened almost 10 years ago. the program got me switching the departments of a 5 diamonds hotel, and I was a pool attendant for a month. I was just sitting there, making lemonade. I was so happy when I switched the department one month later.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?

I would have been a makeup artist.

If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

Uhm, besides Bucky, I think it will be Niki.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I would love to study crystals and basically become a crystallographer.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe Web 20?

Open-minded, professional, and customer-oriented.

What is something you learned in the last week?

Customer Success wise – I learned to improve our current recommendations and automate large big data sheets we create for our largest clients.

I am also into PPC, and I just learned how to have a better perspective on a campaign. Still training and working on it, but I am getting there.

This Week in the Lab with SEO Mad Scientist

What Can You Do to Solve Cannabilization Issues? Here’s What We Are Testing…
Welcome back, SEO mad scientist, to another weekly update!

This week we’re going to have a quick update on our cannibalization tests and what we have done to see how we can influence Google to uncannibalize our listing instead of ranking other listings at the same location.

We currently have two listings at the same location with a few different keywords cannibalizing each other. We’ve done a few things for each situation to test their impact on the cannibalized term.

Let’s take a look at the current rankings and what we are testing.
Test #1: This test is mostly onsite variables. We simply added another relevant service page for the primary keyword, “Search Engine Optimization Analysis,” added a link to the page in our primary site menu, and added additional references to the homepage of the website (all things we found influence local ranking from previous tests.)
Test #2: We mostly tested the listing optimization for this test. We’ve added some additional categories and services to the listing and a couple of optimized “products.”
Test #3: For our final test term, we wanted to test a combination of on-site and off-site signals but try something new. For this test, we published some relevant content on the site for long-tail terms (using the blog) and syndicated these posts on our business listing.

We saw very little movement from GBP posting a long time ago, but there could be more weight on this now.

Join us next week as we dig deeper into our cannibalization tests and break down the details of our first test term, exactly what was done and what results see.

Until then, happy testing!

GBP Cannabilization… How Can We Fix It?

Hey there SEO Testers! We have been working hard behind the scenes trying to create a cannibalization scenario with a test listing so that we could begin to do some controlled cannibalization tests…

The time has come to start reviewing these awesome tests and see if we can begin to crack the “cannibalization code”!

The past few weeks, we have talked about listings that we had the services pulled in from the website to get added to the GBP listing and how these terms and their placements on the website directly influenced rankings.

We have now put up a second listing at the same location with optimization for “search engine optimization” to attempt to create a cannibalization scenario we can begin testing on.

As of a few days ago, we now have the listing starting to show for terms, but the first listing is clearly suppressing it…

unnamed (49)

Even after a few more days, we see some upward movement, but nothing compared to what we saw from the first listing optimization once it started to show for the term.

unnamed (50)

Both listings had the same optimization done but with a few tweaks to test some things.

First, each listing has a different primary category…

unnamed (51)

We wanted to see if the primary category at all influenced the cannibalization.

We had assumed this wouldn’t be the case because that doesn’t change the fact that both would be listed in the same SERP result. So our theory seems true; the listing’s categories have nothing to do with being filtered and is purely a keyword-specific occurrence.

We know this happens when two listings are at the same exact location, and when someone searches a keyword, Google won’t return two listings right on top of each other. In some cases of attorneys, if this were the way it worked, we would see all the pins right at one location zoomed in on one building.

So if the primary category doesn’t impact this, maybe the pin location does?

Previously when testing if service area businesses wouldn’t experience this issue versus a local address because they’re not technically “at that location,” there didn’t seem to be any difference. Still, now that setting your business up as a SAB seems to recenter your PIN in the middle of your service area, this may help with the issue.

This is why one of our listings is a SAB, but we can see from the current results that the verified location still is the primary factor on whether listings cannibalize each other.

With this understanding, we don’t believe there is a way we can get both listings to show for the top term, but if we can figure out how to get Google to switch which listing is being cannibalized, that will definitely be beneficial.

Join us next week as our GBP cannibalization tests continue as we try to crack the code on how to get your business unfiltered.

Until then, happy testing!

However, “telemarketing service” is its own category…

So it was interesting to see that we had no rankings when running that term.

So there is a possibility that showing for an exact category term without having the category selected may not be possible. But relevant service terms listed under other categories do influence “related terms.”

This could be useful for adding more relevancy between categories and services based on sub-services categories.

Meaning that if we were trying to rank for “Telemarketing Services,” then selecting that as a primary category with sub-services such as “outbound Telemarketing” would probably be the best place to start, but considering other relevant categories that can have relevant sub-services may help as well.

So selecting “marketing agency” as a secondary category and adding “telemarketing campaigns” as a service under that category may be beneficial.

As usual, we will continue our testing and let you know what we find. Be sure to join us next week with more helpful SEO test updates, and until then, Happy Testing!

What You Should Know About Your GBP Categories
& Services

Welcome back, mad scientist, for another SEO testing update.

Today, we wanted to take a closer look at our Google business profile categories and services from our tests over the past few weeks.

We’ve been attempting to show one of our test listings for the keyword “website design.” You can reference the previous test here, where we added the service term to our website after already having it in our services under our “internet marketing service” category.

We have yet to get any real movement from the term other than related “website design CITY” terms, but even those haven’t held any solid rankings, as you can see from our follow-up here.

unnamed (41)

Unlike our other services, website designer is a specific category for your maps profile. So we were wondering if maybe you could not rank for these certain terms unless you had the proper corresponding category.

We’ve now added the corresponding category to see if we get any movement on those terms, but we still had the question, “Can you show for terms without having the specific category chosen?”

unnamed (42)

However, when we looked at some of our previous tests, one specific term stood out: “Telemarketing.”

You can see on this listing that telemarketing was pulled in as one of our services from the website, and it’s underneath the primary category “Marketing Agency.”

unnamed (43)

From the Geo grids, we can see that we are showing for this term and variations.

unnamed (44)

However, “telemarketing service” is its own category…

unnamed (45)

So it was interesting to see that we had no rankings when running that term.

unnamed (46)
