LinkedIn is a perennially underrated social media platform. It’s not always easy to quantify how effective you are on the platform though. Enter LinkedIn’s Social Selling Index.

This handy metric tells you exactly how effective you are as a social seller while highlighting how you can improve. In this article, I’ll cover everything you need to know about the tool, how to use it properly, and how to improve your score. 

What Is LinkedIn’s Social Selling Index?

Launched in 2014, LinkedIn’s Social Selling Index (SSI) measures how effective you are at social selling on the platform.

LinkedIn uses four factors to calculate your SSI:

  • establishing a personal brand
  • finding the right people
  • engaging with insights
  • building relationships

Each factor is worth 25 points. Complete them all, and you’ll get a perfect score.

There are several reasons to aim for a high Social Selling Index. For starters, a high score increases your reach on the platform. Even if the LinkedIn algorithm doesn’t directly take your SSI into account when determining the reach of posts, all of the individual factors that go into calculating your SSI help you reach a wider audience.

A high SSI can also result in more connection requests and more people following you—which establishes you as a thought leader in your industry and makes it easier to connect with decision-makers.

LinkedIn provides data to back up some of these claims. According to their Social Selling Index page, leading social sellers create 45 percent more opportunities than lower social sellers and are 51 percent more likely to reach quota. In addition, 78 percent of them outsell peers who don’t use social media.

For this metric, LinkedIn looks at how complete your profile is and the quality of the content you post on the platform. Do you have a cover photo, a complete job history, and recommendations? How many posts are you creating, and how many views and comments are those posts receiving?

Finding the Right People

This metric is heavily focused on Sales Navigator, making it tricky for free users to get a good score. LinkedIn wants you to use its tools to find the right people, reach out to them successfully, and create systems and automation to make the process smoother.

Engaging With Insights

Are you sharing popular content? If not, then you probably won’t score too highly in this metric. The more content you share and the more views, likes, and comments it receives, the better you’ll score.

Building Relationships

The final metric is all about network management. It’s a measure of how often and successfully you reach out to people.

Exactly how useful is LinkedIn’s Social Selling Index beyond being a vanity metric? It’s a fair question.

Some people, like Andrew O’Hearn, don’t see much value in the tool. He believes SSI is a way for LinkedIn to push Sales Navigator.

Do we really want to reinforce the ‘keyboard commando’ proclivities of some LinkedIn users who don’t often test their online assumptions in the real (face-to-face) business-related networking communities?

I think there are quite a few things you can do with SSI, however. Here are a few reasons to pay attention to LinkedIn’s Social Selling Index.

Measure Your Personal Brand

Checking your SSI is a great way to understand the strength of your personal brand and take actionable steps to improve it. After all, what gets measured gets managed, and you may not realize just how far you are behind your peers until it’s pointed out.

You may think you’re slaying LinkedIn, but perhaps you’re not making enough new connections or posting enough valuable content. Either way, your SSI can easily highlight areas to improve.

The impact of that increase was telling. Those with higher SSIs saw a 37-percent increase in opportunities, and every 10-point increase saw 4.3 more opportunities.

It doesn’t matter what your SSI score is, there’s bound to be something you can do to improve it. Below I’ve listed five of the best strategies to improve your SSI and increase your effectiveness on the platform.

Fill out Your LinkedIn Profile Completely

The first and easiest thing you should do to improve your Social Selling Index is to completely fill out your profile. There’s a lot to do here, so here are some jumping off points to get you started.

  • add a profile picture
  • fill out your job title
  • add a helpful, keyword-rich summary
  • add your education and skills
  • request recommendations from colleagues and clients
  • add examples of your work in the featured section

You’ll be amazed at how much your SSI score can jump just by filling out your profile properly. Be careful, though. You don’t want to include so much information that your profile becomes unreadable.

Whenever you are adding information to your profile, always ask yourself whether people would find it useful.

Connect With the Right People on LinkedIn

You need a big network to succeed on LinkedIn. Remember, while quantity is important, so is its quality. That means you shouldn’t send invites to random people. Instead, you take the time to find the right people.

That means people who:

  • you know personally
  • are thought leaders in your sector
  • work in your sector generally
  • are people you buy from or sell to

The more cohesion in your network, the stronger it will be.

Use LinkedIn’s advanced search functionality to find the right people to connect with. Some of the features are only available for premium accounts, but even free users can leverage filters to find relevant people to connect with and improve their SSI.

Having a big network is important, but so is engaging with them. You need to be in regular contact with a good chunk of your network to show the algorithm you’re committed to building long-term relationships.

Don’t just spam a load of people with connection requests. Aim high and start to follow thought leaders in your industry. Engage with their content thoughtfully and try to strike up a conversation. Make sure you’re responding to everyone who comments on your posts, too.

Conversations are becoming more important than ever on the platform. LinkedIn reports a 43 percent year-over-year growth in conversations during Q3 of 2021. The more engaged you are, the higher your SSI score will be, and the more conversations you’ll end up having.

Use Sales Navigator

One of the reasons LinkedIn pushes the SSI is to encourage adoption of Sales Navigator. In fact, it’s impossible to get close to 100 without using the paid-for subscription. If you already are a Sales Navigator user, you’ll want to leverage as many of the tools’ functions as possible.

In particular, use the saved search feature to automate finding relevant people to connect with.

Welcome back to another week of the SEO Mad Scientist updates. This week we’re going to be doing our second update on CTR tests. Specifically today we’re going to be doing the second update on a test we started reviewing last week.

If you don’t remember we were testing CTR to a GMB listing. Very basic CTR test using a tool and targeting our main keywords, “print shop” and “printing”. You can check out the previous test here: https://web20ranker.com/seo-updates-june-11-2021/

We set up a few searches a day to search our target keywords as well as some brand terms and then click through the GMB into our GMB site.

Initially, we had seen a slight drop in rankings for a few of our terms but as of doing the update last week where we were about a month into the test, we had started observing some upward movement for a few of the target terms. Specifically, our longer tail terms that we were performing CTR for as opposed to our base category terms that looked like they still hadn’t seen much improvement.

We are at about a full month into the tests now and when this second update we are starting to see some interesting changes compared to our original baseline Geogrids.

 

Of course, we still could be observing regular movement but as of now, all we’ve done is created the listing, generated the GMB site, and set it as the listings website with 3 services added.

So it is unlikely that there would be much movement for the listing outside of possibly the CTR.

If we are in fact seeing SERP increases from the CTR campaign at this point, then we would expect to see the same increases follow through to next week. If this is just SERP fluctuations due to the algo, then it is more likely we will not see anything definitive in our next update.

OK, setting goals is important. The real question is how on earth should you be setting marketing goals?

You can start to see the problem with these kinds of goals. Since qualitative goals are abstract, they’re notoriously difficult to measure.

While they manage to get plenty of traffic, they quickly realize there’s a massive issue. They haven’t learned anything concrete from this campaign. Without a focus on clarity or data collection, they walked away with no real path to growth.

Brand B had a different approach.

How We Achieved Map Pack Rankings for a Multi-Location SAB 

 

Achieving top local rankings for companies with multiple locations presents different challenges. If these locations are near each other, potential filtering becomes an issue.

If you’re working with a multi-location company, there are specific strategies you must utilize. 

Our optimization transformed a messy, inconsistent brand into a state-dominating presence for money terms, even beating out .gov and .org sites in the SERPs. This client is now the top-ranking site state-wide for a variety of high-value terms and their individual GMB listings rank in the map pack for respective cities.

Here’s how we did it….


Optimizing Multiple GMB Listings

GMB listing optimization is included in all DFY GMB campaigns. The includes reviewing listing type, categories, description, and name. 

When we began working with the multi-location brand, they had a mix of legit and fake listings. Some were SAB and some were physical locations, which confused search engines – a brand should not have a mix of listing types. We worked with them to create consistency across listings and reverified where necessary. Once we knew the listings were consistent and following guidelines, we went to work optimizing.

GMB Categories

When we began working with this client, they were not fully leveraging their GMB categories. During our competitive analysis, we identified the common subcategories among top-ranking listings, then implemented them on our client’s listings. 

The more relevant categories a listing has, the broader the relevance. GMB categories are one of the most important listing features as they’ve proven to impact rankings in our Mad Scientist tests. For this client we only had to add a couple categories as it’s a very specific niche. 

 

Watch for Filtering & Overlap

Our client has locations that are located close together. This is a common issue in multi-location SEO campaigns as listings can compete with each other that cause one to not be shown. To combat filtering, we went through each SAB listing and ensured there was no overlap of service areas. We did push the area right up to the line to maximize local relevance for the brand overall.

 

 

Citations & Brand Mentions

Strong local SEO and citations go hand in hand. Brand mentions and citations build prominence, which is one of the two big factors in local rankings. 

Because this was a multi-location business, the citation audit and cleanup was vital to ensure NAP consistency across all locations and assets. Inconsistent NAP citations may seem like a basic detail, but it is the basics that create a solid foundation for rankings.

The audit also allowed us to see which locations were lacking in citations. While every location doesn’t need to have the exact same number of citations, we wanted to make sure we were spreading the love around. Conversely, we also had to consider the competition level of each location. Bridgeport, the biggest city in Connecticut, has higher competition than a more rural city, so more citations will be needed to compete.  

After we identified the inconsistent citations, we submitted updated information. Then, began building new citations – general business citations, as well as locally relevant and/or industry relevant citations. We found new citation opportunities through detailed competitor analysis that shows common citations among competitors. These are the gaps we began to fill. 

Our process is to build citations in tiers, starting with the most impactful citations first. Once we have created all our essential citations, we then work on secondary citations. Keep in mind, secondary citations alone won’t move the needle, but they do support increased brand visibility and authority. Generally, our next step would be niche citations, but we don’t have a citation package for this niche, so we moved on to our Custom Signals to find additional opportunities. 

Tiered Links to Citations

After we built the essential and secondary citations, we used tiered links to boost the power of our citations. This tiered linking approach increases authority of citations, which then passed through to our main site. We don’t use tiered links to link directly to our client’s site. 

Using tiered links also improves indexation of citations. Most of the client’s citations were indexed quickly because of this strategy, which propped up local rankings. We also included unique descriptions for each citation to increase indexation. 

 

 

Brand Building

To build and strengthen your brand online, we include multiple branding features in our GMB campaigns – brand foundation creation and brand boosting.

Be sure to leverage all website features possible. For this campaign, we used:

Find Us Locally

The more trust signals you can include for a brand, the better off you are. On every location page we included a “Find Us Locally” to capitalize on trusted 3rd party reviews (signals). This strategy also highlights our 3rd party reviews, which Google uses as a local ranking factor. Below is a screenshot of the local review sites we used.  

County Pages

We built local relevance for areas where the client didn’t have an address, but still served using county pages. The county page included:

  • 350-word intro using our supporting terms. 
  • NAP for each client location in the county 
  • Link to the location page
  • Industry-relevant points of Interest in the county
  • Keywords with local modifiers

We linked to each county page from the homepage of the site and included these in the main navigation. We also listed out every city on the homepage, linking to the cities with dedicated location pages. Cities without a location page were not linked. Here is an example of one county section on the homepage. 

We created 7 county pages to cover the entire state. These county pages allowed us to expand our relevance and aided in dominating the local rankings state-wide. If you’re working with a brand that has multiple locations in a county, we recommend building county pages in addition to individual location pages.

Including local news can broaden relevance by adding another layer of local content. 
 
You want to find local news that is relevant to your niche. For our client, they are in the legal industry so we focused on news about the court houses, state laws, local committees, and different law updates and changes.

Yesterday, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey hinted at the prospect of integrating Lightning Network into the platform. Dorsey responded to a follower’s Tweet, stating that it was “only a matter of time” before this became a reality. Dorsey is a strong supporter of Bitcoin and has integrated it into another of his firms, Square.

Dorsey responded to a follower’s tweet by stating that this was “just a matter of time.” Surprisingly, the debate began with a discussion of an app called Sphinx. The software makes advantage of the Lightning Network to transport communications between users and to process payments.
