To further investigate what this means in practice, I spoke with Joan Harrington, the Director of Social Sector Ethics at The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

Harrington told me, “The key to integrating ethics in organizations is leadership. The leadership must set the example by living the organizational values and incorporating them into all aspects of the business. So having a code of ethics or a set of values in a handbook is not enough to shape an ethical culture.”

Harrington adds, “Employees need to be trained on, or at least exposed to, how to make ethical decisions. Ethics is not about what you think is right versus what I think is right. It is how we — in all of our different relationships — ought to behave.”

Harrington suggests in an ideal scenario, an entire organization will go through an ethical decision-making training — but, she adds, there are some areas of an organization that are higher-risk for ethical issues than others (like, for instance, engineers working on projects involving AI that might affect millions of people). For those higher-risk groups, these ethical decision-making trainings should be mandatory, not optional.

As Harrington told me, “This is not to say that there may be more than one ethical response, but it is not purely subjective. In training, people need to be exposed to real life situations, relevant to their jobs, so they can really work through how to identify, approach, and decide ethical issues.”

To create a truly ethical culture, it’s critical leaders model ethical behaviors and values, create a strong community, and design ethical systems in which all employees can thrive.

To do this, Ann Skeet, Senior Director of Leadership Ethics at the Markkula Center, advises leaders to “use goals, mission, and values to make decisions about compensation and other rewards, like promotions.”

Ultimately, ethical leadership needs to be baked into the processes, not an “afterthought”. This way, it isn’t just one person’s sole responsibility to raise her hand and say, “That doesn’t seem fair to me.” Instead, the very foundation of the organization should be built upon ethical pillars, including honesty and fairness, so that each business decision is made with these values top-of-mind.

Harrington adds, “For all organizations, to figure out whether marketing is ethical, you’ll want to ask whether marketers are operating transparently? Is the product accurately described? Is the marketing ahead of the actual product? And is there undue pressure on potential consumers?”

In 2017, Home Depot took it a step further — now, you can also use their app to check out how objects like patio furniture, faucets, and other products look in your home.

Home Depot isn’t the only home furniture store to use AR to create value for their users — Lowe’s and Ikea have similar AR technology built into their apps.

2. Timberland

If you’re anything like me, the idea of trying on items in the dressing room can sometimes deter you from shopping at all. More than once, I’ve said, “I’ll buy it, try it on at home, and return it if I don’t like it,” just to avoid the hassle of carrying a pile of clothes into a dressing room line.

In the interest of convenience and comfortability, Timberland created a virtual fitting room in Moktow Gallery in 2014. Using Kinect motion sensing technology, Timberland’s virtual fitting room allowed shoppers to see an image of their face, and a similarly-sized model body, in different outfits.

If you’re going to use AR, you’ll want to brainstorm unique ways to help your customers avoid an otherwise burdensome process. While fitting rooms might not be the end of the world (first-world problems?), Timberland stands out as a helpful brand by offering customers a fun and useful alternative.

3. Sephora

There’s a reason many women don’t buy makeup products online — it’s impossible to know if you’ll like the lip color or foundation coverage if you don’t try it on, in-store.

Sephora understands this struggle, and created an augmented reality experience, Virtual Artist App, with ModiFace to ensure Sephora app users can see how makeup products will look on their face via their phone’s camera. Users can also find out which tools or products they’ll need to apply certain products.

Additionally, Modiface’s augmented reality technology can show users the effects of months of skincare on their skin — a visual they won’t find in-store.

Bridget Dolan, Sephora’s head of innovation, appreciates the necessity of a long-term AR strategy. “When it comes to augmented and virtual reality, it can only be successful if it’s truly useful,” Bridget told Glossy. “We weren’t interested in just buzzy. A lot of things like technical accuracy and timing had to come together, and there was a time last year when, during testing, we hit a tipping point.”

Sephora’s use of augmented reality isn’t just helpful for users — it also drives sales by appealing to Sephora’s more tech-savvy consumers, and encouraging those consumers to become brand ambassadors by recording and sharing their augmented reality experiences online.

4. AMC Theaters

Delivering a message when and where your audience wants to receive it is a critical component of a successful marketing strategy. This is especially true when it comes to AR.

AMC Theaters, understanding their audience is most interested in upcoming movie trailers when they’re at the movies, incorporated AR technology into their AMC app. When a user sees a movie poster in a theatre, they can open the AMC app on their phone, scan the poster, and receive relevant information, including a cast list and a trailer.

If they’re interested in the movie after scanning, they can also purchase a ticket immediately, within the app.

Ultimately, AMC Theatres is providing optimal convenience with their use of AR — while a user can YouTube a trailer or Google a review, there’s an added incentive to check the movie out and purchase a ticket when the user can do it all in one place.

5. Taco Bell

There are two big reasons you’d visit a Taco Bell in 2012 — to try their new Doritos taco shell, or to play with their augmented-reality packaging.

Taco Bell placed an AR feature on each Locos Tacos box and soda cup for their Doritos shell campaign. When a user scanned the box with the Taco Bell app, they could see product-related Twitter and Facebook content on their phones.

By connecting their users with live social media content, Taco Bell successfully used AR to cultivate a stronger sense of community. They also showcased their brand as a major player in innovation, particularly in the fast-food industry.

6. StubHub

Augmented reality enables you to both visualize and interact with a space — two critical functions when choosing how much you’re willing to pay for a stadium seat.

For Super Bowl LII, StubHub introduced an AR feature on their mobile app that allowed ticket buyers to see a virtual 3D model of the U.S. Bank Stadium, as well as nearby parking garages and concession stands. This enabled potential buyers to visualize their full experience before purchasing, and minimized the risk of paying for a subpar seat.

StubHub’s reliance on AR solved for a common customer problem — as StubHub CTO Matt Swann points out, “We’re solving for real pain points, not just tech for the sake of tech. For a lot of people, it’s not an event you just show up for, it’s kind of a bucket list item.”

Particularly for out-of-towners, the ability to virtually compare different seat locations adds a level of comfort for hesitant buyers.

Back in 2016, the company also introduced a “virtual view” option on their app, letting ticket buyers preview their view from their seats before purchasing. The results were tremendous — StubHub saw app engagement more than double within one year.

AR and Experiential Marketing

7. Netflix

To market season two of the Netflix original series Stranger Things, the streaming company launched a series of AR/VR lenses on Snapchat. With the lens shown in the video below, users could record videos of themselves walking through one of the houses seen in the show, as monsters called Demigorgons pop out of the wall. 

Aside from this lens, which is incredibly immersive for a mobile app, Netflix has also leveraged AR filters to promote its content.  The video below highlights just a few that were featured on apps like Facebook and Snapchat. 

8. Pepsi

In 2014, Pepsi installed AR technology in a London bus shelter, making it appear as if a lion, UFOs, flying saucers, and other objects were headed straight for Londoners.

The production showcased Pepsi’s playful personality and provided the audience with an exceptional experience. Afterwards, a video of the bus shelter’s AR technology attracted over six million views on YouTube — making it one of YouTube’s most viewed advertising campaigns.

Pepsi’s campaign highlights the effectiveness of AR when a company truly knows their audience. Pepsi didn’t need to use AR to advertise their products — instead, they trusted their consumers to appreciate the surreal experience and naturally share the story with friends, creating buzz around their brand as a result.

The State of AR in Marketing

While a number of brands still can’t access AR quite yet, marketers can still take a note from how these brands creatively implemented a new technology into their content marketing strategies.

Some Digital Agencies Treat SEO Like Wearing a Face Mask

CovidiotLSG is hiring for a Senior Director of SEO position and I have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of great SEOs over the past week. Thanks to the growth of our industry over the past few years and COVID-19, it feels like there’s an ocean of highly skilled talent out there. But the pandemic has exposed an ugly side of the digital marketing industry – most agencies are happy to take SEO money while simultaneously not giving a shit about SEO.

From my admittedly limited perspective, the agencies who were hit hardest post-SIP seemed to be those who had big PPC businesses and those who had SMB-focused service businesses (v SaaS subscriptions which seem to have kept chugging along). It kind of makes sense in that PPC spending came to a halt and many SMBs’ businesses hit a brick wall. We lost an SMB client the day SIP went into effect, but we didn’t lose any PPC clients, because we don’t do PPC.

In my conversations with candidates for the Director position, those who work at agencies have had a consistent refrain – “we lost a lot of PPC budget so they cut a few heads in the SEO group”. I am sure the PPC groups were not immune to cuts either, but over and over I have heard claims that an agency “doesn’t really care about SEO”. Sure they’ll sell it. They’ll even hire people to do it. But it’s not the business’ priority. That kind of makes sense in that SEO can be harder to service and measure than buying clicks. Perhaps most important, it can be harder to explain to clients, particularly clients who are worried about going out of business. Selling a steady stream of customers at a (hopefully) predictable cost per click probably feels like the path of least resistance so why fight it?

The challenge as I self-servingly see it is that to do SEO right, you have to fund it appropriately. Of course, there are cases where companies have great brands and products and everything just takes off on its own, but for most of us, this is not how it works. And SEO for most sites that want to compete, requires expertise at a wide range of unrelated disciplines – technical analysis, content strategy, content production, backlink acquisition, and data analysis, to name but a few. And let’s not forget about people and client management. Those are probably the top two ranking factors these days.

But it’s easy to sell that your agency does SEO, particularly if you have already sold a client on a PPC campaign. It’s basically free money for you. And it’s likely more profitable than the PPC business, but at lower volumes. So agencies like it, but maybe don’t care enough about it to give it the funding it really needs for its teams to succeed because it’s more profitable not to. And most clients maybe pay more attention to the $ you are spending every day for them on PPC because it’s so much more significant.

I am sure there are plenty of you out there who will say “not my agency!” and good for you. But one of the things COVID has exposed is how much we each care about a lot of things. And it seems like there are a bunch of you out there who treat SEO like Trump treats wearing a face mask.

In terms of SEO (search engine optimization), LSI keywords are search terms related to the main keyword you are targeting. They help to support your content and add more context to make it easier for both users and search engines to know what your content is about.

Both the above and below are examples of suitable LSI keywords for this post’s primary keyword, which is “LSI keywords”:

Are LSI keywords the same as synonyms?

Incorporating LSI keywords into your content boosts the contextuality of your content and yields SEO benefits:

  • They boost your website’s ranking in search engines: Sprinkling LSI keywords throughout your text helps search engines to understand your page and boost its ranking power.

Do LSI keywords have any disadvantages?

LSI keywords don’t necessarily have any disadvantages, but the indexing method does have some limitations. For example:

  • It doesn’t consider the order of words and disposes of all conjunctions and prepositions.

  • It does not recognize underlying ideas and irony. In some cases, the meaning of the words may not match the meaning of the text.

But, Google wasn’t just focused on keywords. The search giant also wanted to understand anchor text in hyperlinks, as well as groups of sites that link to each other (also known as SEO neighborhoods).

With all this in one algorithm update, Google dramatically changed the way it delivers search results.

No longer was the search engine targeting exact-match keywords in web content. Now the algorithm could understand context and synonyms. Instead of looking at a single keyword and its frequency of use to find out what the page was about, Google could now analyze everything offered on the page.

In the early days, Google’s crawlers, also known as “spiders”, would automatically find and scan websites by crawling from one link to another on connected web pages. As they crawled, they would look at the keywords on a page to help them identify its topic.

For example, if you were to publish a post titled “21 Tips For Effective Email List Segmentation,” Google would scan your page to determine if you used the term “email list segmentation” in key areas on your website, including:

  • The title tag,
  • Content body,
  • Image alt text,
  • H1 heading, H2 and H3 subheaders, and so on.

But, after the LSI update, Google’s crawling method changed, resulting in these SEO improvements:

Interestingly, it should be noted that even though Google owns YouTube, they primarily run on two different search engines and algorithms. What I’ve found surprising is that it doesn’t seem that, at the time of this writing, YouTube utilizes LSI keywords for rankings.

As a YouTube creator myself, I try to include primary keywords in the titles of my videos and rarely pay attention to LSI keywords, and the videos still rank well. The only place I’d be able to put them is in the description of the video, but it doesn’t seem like it’s required. 

So while YouTube searches do pull up related suggestions, there aren’t many places to insert LSI keywords.

YouTube SEO relies mainly on high-quality editing to increase engagement and the click-through rate of the thumbnails. Of course, I’m over-simplifying a complex algorithm, but it’s a universally accepted truth that high-quality editing, rather than LSI keywords, is the biggest factor in YouTube’s algorithm.

So although LSI keywords seem to be an important factor on the Google search engine, they are not as important in the YouTube search engine.

Serpstat is yet another effective tool that helps you find semantically related phrases for your posts. Simply enter your main keyword and click SEO Research > Related Keywords. You will be presented with a long list of words and phrases to choose from.

Of course, there are many other related keyword finders out there, including Ahrefs and Moz SEO tools. These are great because they not only provide you with a comprehensive list of related keywords that people typically search for on the topic, but they also allow you to filter the words and phrases by connection strength, search volume, and cost per click.

Before you determine how to incorporate LSI keywords into your text, you need to identify the ones best suited for your topic. For instance, if you were writing a blog post targeting the main keyword “blog SEO”, the tool you’re using might spit out an endless list of options, including:

On the other hand, if the post was about the different ways to optimize your blogging SEO, you would choose LSI phrases like “how to optimize your post for SEO” and “X blog post SEO tips”.

Look at the total monthly search estimate

Sometimes, determining the best LSI keywords for your phrases can be really difficult, as some suggestions may make sense as a completely different post altogether.

For example, if you were writing a post about “online course platforms” you’d see LSI keyword suggestions like “online course learning platforms.”

When this happens, you need to determine if the suggestion would make better sense as an individual article, or as an addition to the original post. For me, I usually look at the total monthly search estimate to decide whether it’s worth it to write something new, or include the suggestion as a part of the original article I’m researching.

The keywords that your tool offers will work for different contexts, and you need to determine which ones will work best for the specific page you’re creating.

During your research, if you come across keywords that don’t fit your page, you can still make a note of them to use on different pages so you can improve the overall SEO of your website.

Add LSI keywords to your page

You should add your LSI keywords to the same places you would add your main keyword, including:

  • Meta title and meta description
  • Headings (H1, H2, H3)
  • Image alt tags
  • Throughout the body text

Make sure you sprinkle related words and phrases throughout your post in a natural-sounding way. This will help broaden your opportunities since you can’t use the main keyword over and over again in all the important areas of your page.

Focus on user experience

Don’t overuse LSI keywords in your content. Trump revealed as the most muted word on Twitter

2020 has been anecdotally cited as one of the worst years for a long while – many people are expecting aliens to turn up at our doorstep to round it off.

With such an eventful 6 months behind us, we wanted to see whether recent events had impacted how we engage with social media and the online world.

After all, it is one of the main ways we connect with one another…or is it?

We surveyed 5,012 Americans to find out how the pandemic and other key 2020 events had affected society’s social media habits, and it turns out that six out of 10 (58%) Americans have sworn off social media. By that, we mean they have decided to significantly reduce their time on it because it is having a negative impact on their lives.

It looks as though a significant amount of Americans also won’t be returning to social media, with one in ten (13%) completely deactivating all of their accounts. On the contrary, a third of participants (34%) said that they would never be able to delete their social media accounts, with more than a quarter (27%) stating that social media was their main or only source of news.

When it comes to how we’re spending our time without social media, results show that Americans have mostly been exercising, reading, gaming and resting their minds with mindfulness and meditation instead – very healthy and wholesome!

It seems as though the jump up in mindfulness hasn’t helped everyone however, with two-fifths of respondents (37%) admitting to engaging in arguments or debate in the last four months, with two out of ten Americans (21%) even admitting to blocking friends or family as a result!

The HOTH also discovered what the top 10 most muted words on Twitter since May are – most are pretty understandable, with news relating to these words often being negative:

  • Trump
  • Election
  • Kanye
  • Mask
  • Elon
  • Pandemic
  • Ellen
  • Joe Exotic
  • COVID
  • Virus

When asked why they felt the need to mute words and phrases on Twitter, a third of respondents (31%) stated that they felt the words were ‘triggering’, or poor for their mental health. A quarter (26%) of people cited the reason ‘annoying/irritating’, a fifth (17%) stated that they were ‘not interested’, with the remaining quarter selecting ‘other’, with reasons such as a friend or family member suggesting that they mute the phrase coming up regularly.

Also when asked about trending topics, almost half of respondents (a huge 47%!) said that Twitter’s trending topics were how they kept up with current affairs, 17% said they would never use trending topics as a news source, a quarter (26%) said that they use a combination of trending topics and more traditional news sources. The final 10% said that they rarely ever, or have never checked trending topics.

“Being always-connected can be a big stressor, so I personally think it’s important for us to switch off every once in a while, even if the plan is to return to our favorite websites and apps. I think social media is a fantastic tool but I also know how overwhelming it can be with a constant feed of information.”

Long-Tail Keywords – 3 Key Ways to Find Super-Focused Keywords

One of the toughest aspects of working in SEO is convincing clients that what you’re doing will pay off. Choosing to optimize for long-tail keywords can be a tough fight to win, with some clients not immediately understanding why we’d opt to target lower volume keywords.

While it might seem totally counterproductive to optimize for less popular search terms, the truth is, targeting long-tail keywords results in increased traffic and conversions.

Pages optimized for long-tail keywords have a click-through rate up to 19% higher than those optimized for short-tail keywords. More clicks mean more traffic and more chances to turn visitors into customers. 

The statistics are tremendous, obviously. But this article will really prove to you the benefits of optimizing for long-tail keywords, along with the most effective ways to find them.

What Are Long-Tail Keywords?

Long-tail keywords are low volume, less competitive search terms. As they are super-focused search queries, long-tail keywords generally convert better.

It’s important to note that the length of the search query doesn’t determine whether or not it’s considered long-tail. An Ahrefs study showed that 29.13% of keywords with a search volume of 10,001+ contain three or more words.

Hence, around a third of high volume search queries are actually longer phrases, rather than just one or two words.

Remember that longer keywords might not necessarily be less popular keywords. Do your research to determine volume and competition.

Why Are Long-Tail Keywords Important?

Long-tail keywords are important because the large majority of online searches are long-tail. They make up around 70% of search traffic. The other thing about long-tail keywords is that they are easier to rank for. Think about it: if you only go after popular keywords you’ll be constantly battling with major brands for a top spot on the SERPs.

What did you search for last? I searched “what to do for a strained neck”… Ahh, the joys of laboring over a computer all day. Anyway, this is a low volume keyword with low competition:

Chances are your last Google search comprised a long-tail keyword, too. Because the large majority of online searches are long-tail. They make up around 70% of search traffic:

This proves that if you overlook long-tail keywords you could be missing out on a lot of potential traffic.

The other thing about long-tail keywords is that they are easier to rank for. Think about it: if you only go after popular keywords you’ll be constantly battling with major brands for a top spot on the SERPs.

These big brands have been at it for a while and they have a lot of authority on the web. To be in with even a chance of ranking alongside them would take a lot of time and effort on your part.

But, if you optimize for less competitive, long-tail keywords, you’ll rank and increase traffic much quicker. Then, as you build momentum, increase traffic, and prove your authority on the web, there’s a chance you’ll start ranking for popular, high volume keywords, as well. Win.

Not only are long-tail keywords easier to rank for but they also bring in qualified traffic. When users make specific, intentional searches, they’re much more likely to convert. 

According to Google’s advice on improving your conversion rate

Generally, more specific keywords like “Acme 710c” tend to lead to a better conversion rate than general keywords like “Acme.” That’s because people searching for specific models or product numbers have typically already researched their product and want to make a purchase.

How does this work in a real life scenario? Well, let’s say a user searches “hairdressers that do box braids”, (which is a long-tail keyword):

Obviously, there’s a crystal clear objective behind this search query. If your page is optimized for this query and satisfies the user’s objective, then it’s more likely to result in a salon visit.

Pages optimized for short-tail keywords suit broader audiences. While those optimized for long-tail queries serve the needs of a specific audience.  And as a result of you serving the needs of searchers better, you’ll get more customers.

Now you understand the value of long-tail keywords, but where do you find them?

1. Audience Questions

Nowadays, Google’s main concern is satisfying the needs of the user. As such, a key pillar of their mission statement is “Focus on the User”.

Here, they explain how they perform testing and make changes to the search engine so that they always provide the most useful and relevant results for the user. And, of course, we know they’re referring to those pesky algorithm updates.

So, SEO these days is less about traditional keyword research and more about providing value to the user. Which means you have to create content that is rich in the information that real users are searching for.

To do this, consider what questions users ask in relation to your product or service, as well as your industry. This is an easy way to generate long-tail search queries that respond to the information they most desire.

Thankfully, there are several ways to find question-based long-tail keywords. The first place to look is Google’s “People Also Ask” box. This SERP feature generates tons of questions related to the main search term.

For example, if you type in “counselling services”, these questions pop up:

It illustrates the type of information those who search for counselling services also want to know. To show Google that you care about the user, you’ll need to answer these questions somewhere within your content.

Other places where you can find real user questions are forums and platforms where people tend to ask their peers questions. Find industry-specific forums through a simple Google search – “your niche + forum”:

The most useful forums will have high membership numbers and lots of recent activity. This is because older questions don’t represent current trending search terms or topics.

Larger platforms with multiple categories, such as Reddit and Quora, are also good choices. Let’s say you run a careers service. A quick search of Reddit reveals a relevant subreddit r/careerguidance

The page features questions, such as “How to get remote jobs?” and “How do you deal with career FOMO?”

These are great long-tail keyword ideas. But, to get even more value from a forum page like this, look out for similar questions that appear multiple times, as well as the questions users engage with most. On Reddit, this would mean the most comments and up-votes. This indicates what kind of information your audience is looking for most.

Another useful resource is AnswerThePublic. Type in one of your main keywords and you’ll receive a chart packed with all of the questions search engines autosuggest in relation to your keywords. 

For example, here’s what a section of the chart looks like when you type in “florist”:

Answer the public

There are questions, such as “where to buy florist supplies”, “when to do floristry for the wedding”, and tons more great suggestions.

Click “Download CSV” to get a spreadsheet containing all of the search terms. Sort through these terms and delete those which are not relevant to your niche or the services you provide.

Once you have a list of relevant, question-based long-tail keywords you can begin to target them. 

These keywords make for excellent blog post topics. Or you can create dedicated support pages around the keywords on your website. 

For instance, the following flower delivery service has dedicated FAQ pages for each of their main categories. Here, they answer questions about the type of flowers you should send for new baby, whether it’s okay to deliver flowers to a hospital and so on:

Like this company, you can serve your audience’s needs by seeking out and answering their most pressing questions. As a result, you’ll also please Google and likely see a rise in rankings.

2. Google’s Suggestions

If you want to find long-tail keywords closely related to your niche or topic, it makes sense to go straight to the source. 

There are two main spots where Google makes suggestions. The first is via their autosuggest function. Here’s an example:

Type in “hire a contractor” and you see more specific, less popular search terms, such as “hire a contractor app” and “hire a contractor to build a house”.

The next option is to look at the related search section at the bottom of the SERP. Here we have even more related long-tail search queries:

When you perform this kind of keyword research, the trick is to take similar keywords and bundle them together. The reason being, many are so similar that it wouldn’t make any kind of sense to create dedicated pages or blog posts for each. Neither from a business perspective nor an SEO perspective.

But your keyword bundles are still extremely useful. You may be thinking… Ahh, because of LSI keywords. Well, I’m going to bust another SEO myth wide open and say LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords aren’t really a thing. 

Experts tend to agree that although LSI keywords don’t technically matter, Google does require synonyms or related words and phrases to understand what a web page is all about.

So, take a bundle of long-tail keywords and integrate them into one page or one piece of content. It’s an efficient way to optimize your content for the long-tail and it’s super beneficial for your overall SEO strategy.

The added bonus here is that content can rank for multiple, even hundreds of long-tail keywords. In one case study, an agency found a rather tasty piece of low-hanging fruit in the form of a content gap for one long-tail keyword: “What happens to your old number plate when you change it?” And their blog post ended up ranking for another 594 search terms.

Anyway, your key takeaway here is to go straight to the horse’s mouth and see what Google thinks the best related search terms are. Then, integrate them into your content to rank for multiple terms at once.

For instance, if you wanted to create a post on the dangers of vaping and Google suggests these terms:

It wouldn’t be difficult to integrate “vaping dangers”, “vaping health risks” and “harmful effects of vaping” into one piece of content.

You simply need to combine the terms which fit together naturally. 

3. Google Tools

Google’s own tools should be a part of your SEO toolkit. You may have your fave research tool. But we like to kick it old school with Google tools because they’re accessible and free.

Keyword Planner is a natural place to do keyword research and analysis. Head to Keyword Planner and type in one of your overarching keywords. Switch Avg. monthly searches to ascending order. Sort through the results to find keywords with a low search volume (up to 1,000). And finally, pick out those with low or medium competition.

For example, when you type in “accountant”, there are heaps of great suggestions, such as “sap financial accounting” and “chartered tax advisor”:

Don’t worry if there’s a low search volume. Remember that specific searches like these are more likely to result in a conversion. So, using such keywords is still worthwhile.

Another Google tool you can utilize is Google Analytics. Within Analytics head to Acquisition > Search Console > Queries. Here you’ll see the keywords that you currently rank for.

Go through these results with a fine-tooth comb. You may find some low-hanging fruit of your very own. In other words, long-tail keywords that you have ranked for accidentally. 

Then you can go back and refresh content with a relevant section on the search query. By optimizing old blog posts, HubSpot increased organic search views by 106% on average. Which shows just how fruitful historical optimization can be.

Essentially, you should use the tools and data at your disposal for research and analysis. It removes guesswork when it comes to choosing long-tail keywords that are going to perform well for your site.

Summing Up

Long-tail keywords have a serious advantage over short-tail keywords. There’s a higher search demand for them, they’re easier to rank for and they generate qualified traffic that lead to more customers.

Once clients start seeing their traffic increasing, they’ll too understand the value of optimizing for the long-tail.

To find long-tail queries, you first need to look at genuine questions that your audience are asking. If you can create pages that answer user questions and satisfy their needs, you’ll get a gold star from Google.

You can also go straight to the search engine itself to find related terms suggested by Google. These make excellent synonyms to sprinkle throughout your content, which will ultimately lead to higher rankings.

And finally, there are the tried and tested tools, Keyword Planner and Analytics. They will help you take a data-driven approach to keyword research.
