Hey there Mad Scientists. Glad to see you back for another update on our exciting emoji test!

If you haven’t been following along we’ve been testing emojis again as we found some interesting things in the SERPs

When searching an emoji in the search bar with related terms it’s clear that we can see Google is cross-referencing the relevance of what the emoji is in relation to what they believe the intent is you are searching.

 

 

However, we have seen more emphasis on Google correlating the relevance of the emoji to a term versus a term to an emoji.

If you search “rabbit face t-shirt”, you generally will not get listings with emojis in them but if you search “? t-shirt”, you will see results for rabbit face t-shirts that don’t have emojis on the page. If you do searches like “rabbit face symbol” you will find emojis. This gives us another look into how Google is cross-referencing the relevance based on search intent…

 

 

Last week’s test did have some issues due to the emojis not showing up correctly on the page. Because of this, we looked into some more data to see if we could find any type of movement from our efforts, but it appears that all of our test terms, including “scale purple cow attorney”, were not impacted.

 

This leads us to believe that whatever correlation Google is making with the emoji and the relevant terms, is not as simple of a signal as putting an emoji on a web page or using it as a backlink.

We are repeating this test one more time with a more relevant emoji, and instead of a fake keyword, we are going to target the brand…

This means that our anchor text and links will have our emojis and we will also be building off-page anchor text links with the same emojis.

If we see a result we’ll go back and do a more granular test but this will give us an overall understanding if we can see any type of result from these types of links.

First, you’ll need to figure out who you’re really competing with so you can compare the data accurately. What works in a business similar to yours may not work for your brand.

So how can you do this?

Divide your “competitors” into two categories: direct and indirect.

Direct competitors are businesses that offer a product or service that could pass as a similar substitute for yours, and that operate in your same geographic area.

It seems simple enough on paper, but these two terms are often misused.

Let’s use an example: Stitch Fix and Fabletics are both subscription-based services that sell clothes on a monthly basis and serve a similar target audience.

But as we look deeper, we can see that the actual product (clothes in this case) are not the same; one brand focuses on stylish everyday outfits while the other is workout-centric attire only.

Now, this doesn’t mean you should toss your indirect competitors out the window completely.

Keep these brands on your radar since they could shift positions at any time and cross over into the direct competitor zone. Using our example, Stitch Fix could start a workout line, which would certainly change things for Fabletics.

This is also one of the reasons why you’ll want to routinely run a competitor analysis. The market can and will shift at any time, and if you’re not constantly scoping it out, you won’t be aware of these changes until it’s too late.

2. Determine what products your competitors offer.

At the heart of any business is its product or service, which is what makes this a good place to start.

You’ll want to analyze your competitor’s complete product line and the quality of the products or services they’re offering.

For publicly held companies, you can find annual reports online, but you’ll have to do some sleuthing to find this info from privately owned businesses.

You could find some of this information by searching through your CRM and reaching out to those customers who mentioned they were considering your competitor. Find out what made them choose your product or service over others out there.

To do this, run a report that shows all prospective deals where there was an identified competitor.

If this data is not something you currently record, talk to marketing and sales to implement a system where prospects are questioned about the other companies they are considering.

How long have you worked with Web 20?

A little over a year. I started as part of the GMB Department during the middle of the pandemic and was then promoted to be the Custom Signals Department Manager a short time after.

 

What does your job entail?

The main idea of ​​the Custom Signals service and, accordingly, my direct work is to search and identify additional opportunities and create signals that are used by the competitors, but at the same time were missed by the client. If you are a responsible person, you have the knowledge and you are ready to learn – this is already a huge plus. My advice is you should be a “universal soldier”. I mean, you have to be ready to learn and complete any task in the field in which you work, plus something more. Often, “something more” is a factor that will help you move beyond those who do the minimum.

 

What drew you to Web 20 originally? And how has Web 20 changed since?

Years ago, when I was just starting to study the specifics on the work of a SEO specialist, everything was a little different. Not many people even understood what SEO was all about. So I started working on freelance sites, and during that time I gained experience with companies in various positions, promoted local businesses and projects of my own, but still seeking opportunity to work elsewhere.  I was contacted by a representative of Web 20, with a job offer. I studied the details about the company and was left with a very good impression. I decided this was a great opportunity and I responded to the offer.

 

Since then, I have climbed the career ladder to manager of a new department, and here I am. In my initial interview I was told – “at Web20 Ranker we have great conditions for career growth”, and that statement was absolutely right!

The Custom Signals department has grown from one person to dozens of people who work on orders every day, and we continue to grow. The same applies to the improvements of the Custom Signals service itself. We are constantly working on new addons, many of which have already been implemented, as well as implementing unique content for each signal.

Change is happening all the time, and this applies not only to the Custom Signals but to the entire company as we are constantly striving to improve the results for our clients!

This is exactly what happened with Twitter Fleets. That’s right, after just 10 short months, Twitter Fleets have been discontinued.

The Short Life of Twitter Fleets

When the production team over at Twitter designed Twitter Fleets, they were hoping to increase the number of new people joining Twitter. Fleets were highlighted at the top of the screen and were similar to Instagram Stories and Snapchat in that posts disappeared in 24-hours.

Ilya Brown, VP of Consumer Product said in a Twitter blog post from July 14th that, “We built Fleets as a lower-pressure, ephemeral way for people to share their fleeting thoughts.”

Snapchat has been building loyal followers since it debuted in July of 2011, and Instagram Stories became a thriving feature for users of the platform in August of 2016, allowing them to share images and videos with their audience which disappear within 24 hours. The idea that Twitter users might enjoy the same low-pressure posting seemed reasonable enough.

The main goal for the feature was to attract more users, Brown said, “Although we built Fleets to address some of the anxieties that hold people back from Tweeting, Fleets are mostly used by people who are already Tweeting to amplify their own Tweets and talk directly with others.”

The announcement in early July had many people wondering why Twitter Fleets was discontinued. Well, after implementing the feature and testing it out for several months, they saw no notable increase in the number of new people on Twitter and decided to ax the project.

It’s now back to the drawing board for Twitter as they look for new ways to inspire people to join the conversation, not only by sharing others’ Tweets but also by creating their own. Brown said that they are using what they learned during this experiment to optimize some of their other features and improve the experience for their users. They found that the top of the timeline is still a great spot to highlight what’s happening now so users will still see Spaces up there when someone they follow is “hosting or speaking in a live audio conversation.” They’ll also explore different updates to improve photos and videos such as the full-screen camera, text formatting options, and the use of GIF stickers.

Social media platforms don’t usually act that quickly to remove a feature that’s producing sub-par results. While Twitter Fleets may not have done what it was intended to do, it has shown the world that if something isn’t working, it can be shut down quickly.

With Twitter Fleets gone, many social media users are looking for alternatives. For now, it looks like Snapchat, Instagram Stories, and Facebook stories are the best options for those looking to post quick pieces of content that are live for 24 hours.

Last week we were talking about our emoji tests and some of the new tests we have underway. Today we want to talk about that specific test and what we did…

With the first test, we are inner linking emojis. As you may remember from last week’s example, when searching for “? merch” Google brings up an Amazon page that has a t-shirt with a “rabbit face”. We believe Google has made this association by seeing the co-citations found online.

 

 

So we took a test page on our website, added a random term, searched for the term on Google with “emoji” on the term, and took what Google gave us as our inner linking anchor text. The keyword we used was:

Our test term – purple cow attorney

So we searched “cow emoji” and replaced the term “cow” with the emoji, and put inner links around the site using the anchor text “purple cow attorney” or “purple ? attorney”…
